Class of 1970
I remember lots of memorable moments from TD’s freshman English course. I remember him going after us on our language by reciting a quote “Say damn if you will, God damn if you must, but never say “shit”, that’s vulgar”. A personal memory was his spelling pop quizzes where he’d give us 10 words to spell and take off 20 points for each misspelled word. I unfortunately received a -20 on a test one day. After class I asked what that meant as far as my grade, to which he responded “Your accumulative grade this year is now 20 points less.” I never became a great speller, but was much improved after that.
I learned years later from correspondence my father had kept of my days at Hermon that TD had written him a monthly letter on how I was doing and the issues I was having in school.
